Restylane Lyft—the injectable gel filler formerly known as Perlane—just received FDA-approval to be used on the hands. Today, Nestlé Skin Health announced that hyaluronic acid dermal filler has been approved for the correction of age-related volume loss in the back of the hands, making it the first hyaluronic acid filler to get approval for this area.

This announcement gives the calcium-based filler Radiesse some competition, as prior to this it was the only filler to be approved by the FDA for the hands. To find out what this news means for someone considering a hand rejuvenation, we reached out to an expert injector who broke down the differences between the two fillers.

“Radiesse is a calcium-based product and Restylane is a sugar-based gel,” explains West Palm Beach, FL dermatologist Kenneth Beer, MD. “Radiesse is sort of thicker and white, and Restylane Lyft is clear and is made of hyaluronic acid. I like Radiesse for people who have a little bit thicker skin and I usually dilute with an anesthetic or reconstitute it to thin it out. I like to use Restylane Lyft for people with thinner skin, so it may be better suited for someone a little bit older.”

The FDA approval of Restylane Lyft for the hands comes after a clinical trial of 89 patients over the age of 22. Study results showed that participants who had the backs of their hands injected the dermal fillers saw improvement in volume for up to six months. This new approval makes Restylane Lyft the only dermal filler on the market that has FDA approval on three separate treatment areas—the midface/cheeks, nasolabial folds and the backs of the hands.
