Botox® is one of the most popular procedures for turning back
Father Time. This procedure involves the injections of a solution
to relax facial muscles that lead to fine lines and wrinkles. With
just a few minutes at the doctor’s office, patients can enjoy a
smoother, younger complexion for up to four months after
treatment.
How is Botox® Used?
Botox® can be used on different facial areas, to smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Some of the most common areas addressed by Botox® include:
- Crow’s Feet (fine lines that appear in the outer corners of the eyes)
- Frown Lines (furrows that appear between a person’s eyebrows)
- Forehead Lines (horizontal lines that span the forehead)
This procedure does not work well on severely sun-damaged skin
or sagging skin that is the unfortunate byproduct of the forces of
gravity. The procedure is also used to treat excessive sweating,
uncontrollable eye blinking, and lazy eye. The formula can also
bring relief to some patients with chronic migraines or urinary
incontinence caused by an overactive bladder.
How Does Botox® Work?
Botox® is typically administered in the physician’s office, with
no sedation or anesthesia required. The doctor carefully marks the
areas for treatment and then uses a very fine needle to inject the
Botox® solution directly into the muscle. The entire procedure
takes just a few minutes to complete, depending on the number of
areas to be treated.
Recovery and Results
After the procedure, patients may return to normal activities
right away. Side effects are rare and may include temporary
bruising and headaches for the first 24 to 48 hours. It may take up
to one full week to see the full results of the procedure. Results
generally last three to four months before a touch-up treatment is
required.
Botox® is a non-invasive, low-cost way to say goodbye to fine lines
and wrinkles that belie your age.
Dysport®
Dysport® is an anti-aging cosmetic treatment very similar to its
predecessor Botox®. Like Botox®, the Dysport® formula effectively
minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing the
facial muscles that cause them.
Dysport® is an injectable solution that uses botulinum toxin Type A
as its base. Small amounts of the formula are injected directly
into facial muscles, using a very fine needle. The toxin relaxes
the facial muscle, which leads to a smoother complexion on the
surface of the skin.
What Can Dysport® Treat?
Dysport® injections can be used to treat a number of areas of the skin where aging becomes apparent, including:
- Frown lines between the eyebrows
- Fine lines at the outer corners of the eyes, known as crow’s feet
- Small, fine lines around the lips
- Lines that appear around the neck area
Dysport® is particularly beneficial for patients that have
developed a resistance to Botox®, since they are less likely to
develop a tolerance to the Dysport® solution.
How Does It Work?
Dysport® is a non-invasive procedure that does not require the
administration of any type of anesthesia. Patients may be offered a
topical anesthetic in some cases, if they are concerned about their
comfort during the procedure. The skin is cleansed and carefully
marked to ensure precision in the administration of the
injections.
The physician then injects the formula under the skin, using a
small needle. The procedure may take anywhere from a few minutes to
a half-hour to complete, depending on the number of treatment areas
to be addressed. Patients typically require anywhere from three to
five injections to complete treatment.
Recovery and Results
Patients can return to normal activities immediately after the Dysport® procedure. Results may be seen within 24 to 48 hours after treatment. While Dysport® results may last longer than Botox®, they will need to be repeated periodically to maintain the appearance.
