What Is a Botox Lip Flip & How Does It Work?

The shape and movement of your upper lip are controlled by a circular muscle called the orbicularis oris, which borders your mouth and helps with speaking, drinking, and smiling.

When you smile, this muscle can pull the upper lip inward and upward, causing it to "disappear" or curl under. During a Botox lip flip:

  • Targeted Micro-Dosing: Dr. Zedlitz places a few tiny, strategically placed units of BOTOX® Cosmetic  into the upper border of the orbicularis oris near the Cupid’s bow.
  • Muscle Relaxation: The Botox temporarily relaxes the muscle fibers that pull the lip inward.
  • The "Flip": As the muscle relaxes, the top lip gently rolls outward ("flips"), exposing more of the pink vermilion border.

The result is a subtly fuller appearance, enhanced definition, and a smile that keeps your top lip visible, all while maintaining your natural lip shape.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

  1. Consultation & Smile Assessment:   Dr. Zedlitz evaluates your facial anatomy, smile mechanics, and aesthetic preferences to determine exact injection points.
  2. Quick Injections (5–10 Minutes):   Using a microscopic needle, Dr. Z places 2 to 4 micro-injections along the vermilion border of the upper lip. Discomfort is minimal and feels like a tiny pinch.
  3. Minimal Downtime:   You can return to work and daily activities immediately. Avoid massaging the lip area, using straws, or vigorous workouts for the first 24 hours.
  4. Onset of Results:   You will begin noticing subtle muscle relaxation in 3 to 5 days, with full results visible around day 10 to 14.

Botox Lip Flip vs. Lip Filler: Which is Right for You?

Many patients ask whether they should choose a Botox lip flip or traditional hyaluronic acid lip fillers  (such as Juvéderm® or Restylane®). Here is how they compare:

Primary Goal:

  • Botox® Lip Flip:   Flips lip outward to show more surface; corrects gummy smile
  • Dermal Lip Filler:   Adds physical volume, plumps thin lips, balances asymmetry

How it Works:

  • Botox® Lip Flip:   Relaxes the orbicularis oris muscle
  • Dermal Lip Filler: Injects hyaluronic acid gel directly into lip tissue

Product Used:

  • Botox® Lip Flip:  BOTOX® Cosmetic (4–8 micro-units)
  • Dermal Lip Filler:  Hyaluronic acid filler

Longevity:

  • Botox® Lip Flip:  8 to 12 weeks (2–3 months)
  • Dermal Lip Filler:  6 to 12 months

Best For:

  • Botox® Lip Flip:  Thinning upper lip when smiling, gummy smiles, subtle definition
  • Dermal Lip Filler:  Those desiring noticeable volume, structure, or lip augmentation
