Say what you will about Kourtney Kardashian’s methods of staying youthful, but whatever she’s doing is working for her. Aside from her well-known ghee-guzzling habit, the 38-year-old shared with her fans that one of her secrets to keeping her skin looking youthful is staying far away from UV lamps in nail salons.

“[A] concern is the UV light that’s used in curing (or sealing) a gel manicure, which can age the skin with brown spots and wrinkles," she writes on her website and app.  It’s no secret that UV light is known to cause our skin damage, but are those tiny lamps enough to wreak havoc on our hands, even if they're in there for seconds at a time? According to Prospect, KY dermatologist Tami Buss Cassis, MD, yes.

“I would never stick my hand in a UV light,” she tells us, explaining that there are concerns over exposing your hand to UV lights over and over. “You risk skin cancer, along with the signs of aging skin."

Swearing off gel manicures entirely is an easy way to nix your chances of damage in the salon, but what if you're a die-hard gel fan? Dr. Cassis says she encourages her patients not to use them, but if you must, wear gloves and sunscreen on your hands. “The last thing anyone needs when trying to get a manicure is older-looking hands—or even worse, skin cancer.”
